Case studies as engineering evidence

Every case study follows the same structure: problem, engineering decision, controlled execution, verification, and a measurable result.
GIS Installation

330 kV GIS Retrofit

Problem
An ageing 330 kV outdoor switchyard required replacement with GIS on a live transmission site, with no tolerance for unplanned outage of adjacent bays.
Engineering decision
Stage the erection bay-by-bay under planned outages, with gas processing and partial discharge testing sequenced so each bay was fully verified before the next outage window was taken.
Controlled execution
Work proceeded under an inspection and test plan with hold points at foundation acceptance, enclosure alignment, gas filling and dew-point verification, and pre-energisation testing. Every hold point was signed off before the next stage commenced.
Verification
PD testing to IEC 62271-203 on every compartment, SF6 dew-point and purity records per filling, and contact resistance measurement on all primary joints.
Measurable result
All bays energised with zero PD defects detected at handover and no unplanned outages during the works.
Substation Design

132/33 kV Zone Substation

Problem
A distribution utility needed a new 132/33 kV zone substation designed to utility standards, with earthing and protection proven before construction tender.
Engineering decision
Complete the primary and secondary design as a single coordinated package — earthing grid study to IEEE 80 / AS 2067 and protection coordination study run in parallel so settings and grading margins were resolved before drawings were issued for construction.
Controlled execution
Design reviews at 30%, 60% and 90% with the utility, each with a documented comment-close-out register. Calculations independently checked before issue.
Verification
Earthing study validated against measured soil resistivity; protection settings verified by secondary injection test plan prepared as part of the design package.
Measurable result
Design package accepted at first utility review with no rework of the earthing or protection studies.
Testing Campaign

Renewable Connection Testing

Problem
A solar + BESS connection required site acceptance testing of HV cables, transformers and protection within a tight commissioning window before network energisation.
Engineering decision
Deploy rented, in-calibration test equipment with a pre-approved test procedure per asset class, so testing could run in parallel work fronts rather than sequentially.
Controlled execution
Test schedule aligned to the commissioning programme with daily progress reporting; every instrument on site carried a current calibration certificate traceable to a national laboratory.
Verification
VLF and tan-delta on cables, sweep frequency response and insulation tests on transformers, and secondary injection on protection — each result recorded against its acceptance criterion at the time of test.
Measurable result
First-pass acceptance on all tested assets; the energisation date was met with no retesting required.
